Lifting Plan creation and development

What is a Lifting Plan

A lift plan on site is a detailed document that outlines the safe and efficient execution of lifting operations. It is a strategic guide that includes steps, precautions, and processes to follow during the operation. The plan is essential for safety and efficiency, ensuring that all activities are carried out safely and efficiently. It is a legal requirement under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and is a mandatory part of every construction project. A lift plan helps in equipment selection, hazard identification, process optimisation, and preparation for unexpected challenges. It is crucial for minimising risks, protecting workers, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements.

What will the plan include.?

A lifting plan is essential for planning and managing lifting operations in the workplace and is crucial for protecting your workforce and demonstrating your commitment to safety standards.

➢Establishes CommitmentIt demonstrates the organisation's commitment to safety, prioritising the well-being of employees and stakeholders during lifting operations.

Risk Assessment: Identify potential hazards associated with the lifting operation and determine measures to mitigate these risks. This includes evaluating the environment, load characteristics, and any nearby obstacles.

➢Method Statement: Detail the procedures and processes to be followed during the lift, including the specific steps involved, the equipment to be used, and the personnel required for the operation.

Equipment Selection: Choose the appropriate lifting equipment (e.g., cranes, hoists, or forklifts) based on the specific requirements of the project. The selection should consider the load weight, height, and site conditions.

➢Personnel Roles: Clearly define the roles and responsibilities of all personnel involved in the lift, including the Appointed Person (AP), crane operators, slinger signallers, and lift supervisors. This ensures accountability and clarity during the operation.

Site Conditions: Assess site conditions to ensure the lifting operation can be carried out safely. This includes evaluating ground stability, weather conditions, and any obstructions that may affect the lift.
Emergency Procedures: Establish protocols for dealing with emergencies or unexpected issues during the lift. This should include communication plans and evacuation procedures in case of an incident.
Communication Plan: Ensure that all team members are aware of the lift plan and their specific roles. Effective communication is crucial for the success of the operation and for ensuring safety.
Approval and Documentation: The lift plan should be documented and approved by relevant authorities before the lifting operation begins. This includes signatures from the Appointed Person and other key personnel.
